Photo Friday - Traveling edition
If you follow me on Facebook, you already know that earlier this week, I flew to Canada for the Surrey International Writers Conference. This is one of my favorite conferences, and it's always one of the highlights of my year!
Not only am I having a great time at the conference, but I really enjoyed the trip up here, as I was able to spend the entire flight reading. I don't have as much free time as I'd like these days, which means I don't get to devote several hours at a time to reading. A plane ride, however, seems tailor-made for a reading marathon, and is often one of my favorite parts of traveling as it gives me a chance to make a dent (however small) in Mount TBR.

Celebrate the Small Things - Family edition
Another week has gone by, which means it's time to Celebrate the Small Things! This fabulous blog hop is the brainchild of VikLit--be sure to stop by her blog for a full list of participating blogs!
This week, I'm celebrating the fact that my brother will be in town for the weekend. He lives in Nashville, so I don't get to see him that often, and it's always a treat when I do. Although I am excited for his visit, it means I had to clean out the guest bedroom. The cats really consider it to be 'their' room, and I'm usually content to let them. However, since actual humans will be occupying the space, I had to do a little tidying up. The kitties are not pleased with my meddling, and are now studiously ignoring me. I predict this will last until about 4:30 am, when their tummies start to rumble...
How was your week?

Eating your vegetables

I ask because I've recently read a few books that didn't work for me. There was nothing technically wrong with the books, but a few elements stood out in a bad way, and it kept me from enjoying the story. Specifically:
1) Character issues. I didn't care for the way the heroine treated the hero, and I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out why he stayed with her.
2) Pacing. This book started out fine, but the last 20% became a mad dash to the finish line, with the plot unfolding in increasingly ridiculous directions, almost as if the author realized they had 'x' number of scenes left to shove into 'y' number of words.
Even though I wasn't excited about these books, I stuck with it and finished them because I figured they would be good examples of what not to do. It's like eating peas--I hate the way they taste, but I know they're good for me (or so I've been told--I have my suspicions on that front). Sometimes I can learn more reading a book I don't enjoy than I do from reading one I like. Still, since I read for pleasure, I don't do this very often.
What about you? Do you struggle through to the bitter end so you can use the book as a primer on what not to do, or do you drop a book that's not working for you because life is too short to read books you don't enjoy?

Arts and crafts...
So my Gentleman Friend called me last week and informed me that his work was holding a pumpkin decorating contest for Halloween. I immediately informed him that we had to win (competitive much?) and we started brainstorming ideas. He wanted to go with a dragon theme, in keeping with the fantastical nature of Halloween. I was reluctant at first, but when I heard what he wanted to do, I jumped on board.
On Friday, we went shopping for supplies. We spent about $30 (never mind the top prize is a $25 gift certificate to a certain coffee chain--it's all about the bragging rights, people!) and finalized the details of our plan.
Saturday we focused on construction. We spent a few hours painting, gluing, and braiding pipe cleaners. Then came the moment of truth as we put everything together....
So what do you think? Personally, I think we have a decent shot at winning (or at the very least, placing in the contest) but I'm a little biased. Regardless, it was fun, and that's what counts!

IWSG - October edition
This month, rather than airing more of my insecurities, I'm going to offer support and encouragement. No matter what obstacles you're facing right now, know that you can overcome them. Writing, like life, is all about perseverance. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other (or one word or even letter after another) and you will get through to the other side.
It's not always easy, and there are times when it feels like you should give up. If that's how you feel right now, give yourself a break. There's no shame in stepping back and taking a breather--just know that you'll jump back in once you've recharged.
Finally, realize that you're not alone. Perhaps you're the only writer you know in real life, and it feels like no one understands how much that form rejection letter hurts. Does your family look at you funny when you do the happy dance because you've just solved a particularly thorny plot problem? Do you feel like no one else in your life understands that working for 2 hours and writing 300 words can feel like more of an accomplishment than climbing a mountain?
We get it. We really do.
This is such an amazing community of writers, but more than that, this is an amazing community of people who are always ready to lend a virtual shoulder to cry on, or to lead a cheer of celebration. So use us. Share your joys, your fears, your struggles, your triumphs. Be there for others as they do the same. And most importantly, just keep going!
