Celebrate the Small Things - Vaccines!

We made it through another week!  How's everyone doing?  Hopefully well!

This week, I'm celebrating the fact that Little Roo got her first round of vaccinations.  As a microbiologist, vaccinations are a topic near and dear to my heart, and as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I explained to all my friends and family that if they wanted to see the baby, they needed to be up to date on their whooping cough and flu shots.  Since they're all used to hearing me sing the praises of vaccines (and since my grandparents actually remember the toll of some of these illnesses from the pre-vaccine days), they agreed.  It was important to me to protect Little Roo the best way I know how, and so far, that has worked.

While she hasn't had all of her shots yet, I feel a lot better about taking her out in public knowing she's on her way to being fully protected from Diphtheria, Pertussis (whooping cough), Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Pneumococcus and Haemophilus influenzae (both can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis), Rotavirus, and Polio.  She's too young for the MMR vaccine so I still have to worry about measles, but I've come to understand motherhood is all about worry.
And now it's my turn.  We're starting to get flu vaccine in my area, so I hope to go out this weekend and get my shot.  An ounce of prevention, and all that good stuff.

I'm also celebrating getting to see a friend this weekend.  She's coming over for lunch and some board games, which should be a lot of fun.

I hope you had a good week.  What are you up to this weekend?  Leave a comment and let me know! :)

If you've been reading my blog, you know that Fridays are reserved for a post where I celebrate the little things that have happened during the week. This is a blog hop created by Vikki and now hosted by Lexa Cain, and it's one of my favorite blogging things to do.  I encourage you to check out her blog and the full list of participants, because who doesn't love reading about good things?

  1. A new babe, how wonderful :) Thank you for the caution on vaccines. So many are afraid of vaccines these days, but I'm here to tell you that whooping cough is no fun. I came down with it as an adult after a trip to Calif, the year it was making a comeback. Adults need to stay current. Vaccines are for everyone's protection, young and old!

    1. Absolutely, Sharon! I too had whooping cough as an adult, and it was a miserable experience. No way would I wish that on anyone, much less a baby or child. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I'm totally with you on the vaccines. It amazes me that otherwise intelligent people have lost the fear of these terrible diseases. Maybe it's just people's nature to forget about the bad times. That's what got us into the current economic mess (changing laws enacted after the '29 crash). And I also think "modern" girls have no appreciation of Women's Lib or they wouldn't even joke about things like 50 Shades. If they'd lived through the 50s-60s, they'd know how important independence and self-respect are. Wishing you a great "play date" with your friend! lol

    1. Totally agree with you! What's that saying--those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it. Scary!

  3. I took my grandson for his 15 mo. checkup and 3 shots. Man did he scream. I felt like a terrible grandma....

    1. Hearing her cry broke my heart, but better a few minutes of tears than days or weeks of illness (or worse!)

  4. Motherhood involves plenty of worrying, but it's nice to know the baby's safer from serious illness.

  5. I enjoyed getting my whooping cough booster, actually, because I hadn't had a shot in so long, I'd forgotten what the needle felt like. It was good to know exactly what baby would be feeling when she got her shots, so I could reassure her that it was no big deal :-) She cried more from the surprise of the jab, the first time, and by the second round, seemed to remember that it was only momentary!

    1. Good point! They're really not that bad--I think the shock of it is the worst part for them
