How much is too much?

So shiny and new!
I read an article today about the re-launch of MySpace.  I'll admit, the screencaps I saw looked good, and they seem to have done a nice job revamping the site.  I'm not sure I'm going to join up again though--with all the Facebook, Twitter, and blogging, there just aren't enough hours in the day to keep up with social media, work, and write.

I've pretty much picked Twitter and this blog as my primary social media activities, at least for now.  If (no, I'm going to think positively) when I get published, I'll probably need to expand my digital horizons, but for now, this works for me.

What's your approach to the whole social media thing?  Do you keep up with everything, or do you just have a couple of accounts you like to work with?  How do you get your name out there while maintaining the time to write?

  1. There's definitely only so much I can handle. I never deleted my MySpace account but it just redirects to my blog. And I'm still not on Twitter!
Emails, Facebook and Google+, two blogs, and the Forum are about the limit of what I can handle.
If I gave up writing, I might join Twitter...
    I'm supposed to be editing!

    1. I know what you mean--it's so easy to spend time promoting yourself at the expense of writing!

  2. Well, as you probably know by now, I blog three times a week, and I have a Facebook account mainly to connect with my siblings. :) I'm a member of Savvy Authors, but I rarely participate there except to take classes. I'm on Goodreads, but mainly use that to keep track of what I'm reading. I haven't really joined any discussion groups. I don't tweet *at all* (don't even have an account). And I'm four tribes at WANA International, but I don't even read the one tribe that's most active. And I'm part of a Robin Hood fandom on LiveJournal.

So my approach is (very) minimalistic. When I sell, I'll probably do very little marketing or promo and just leave sales to the fates. I'll like the money, but sales for the sake of sales is not my driving force.

I'd much rather be writing or cleaning than being overly mass social.

  3. I'm not a writer, just a reader. Still, I only have time for Facebook and Twitter. I still have my MySpace account but it's not worth going back to it.
